50 shades of grey-What I thought.

If you haven’t been hiding under a rock you would of heard about the new 50 shades of grey movie, its everywhere. Is has made £25 million so far in the UK alone!

The 3 part book series was the first to be released and so far the British author EL James has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. It was something new to us, selling an erotic novel in the supermarkets was a shock to some people. I read the first book and just about finished it as the movie was released late to the scene I know! Some bits were a bit iccy for me but overall the book caught my attention with the story line being so unique!

The movie was released on valentines day and had everyone talking, It took to social media quickly and was soon the talk of the internet.
I saw 50 shades of grey twice and I wanted to voice my opinion on it. I am personally quite a shy person if someone talked about sex unless I had consumed quite a large amount of alcohol I would just leave the room. This is why I was nervous watch 50 shades of grey, the reviews looked awful. The story line is about a deepening relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey. Ana first meets Christian Grey at Grey House, which is home to Grey Enterprises, in Seattle. She is there for her roommate, who was meant to interview Mr. Grey for the college newspaper but has fallen sick. Basically its a complicated love story with scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving BDSM.

With people complaining that the film was too sexual to be released I was a bit apprehensive about sitting in the cinema with 50 other people watching a really bad sex scene, makes me cringe. I went with my friend the first time who is such a laid back person, she kept saying it would be a laugh. The film started getting to know Anastasia the main character and didn't take too long till sex was being mentioned. I was really surprised I think film cut out a lot of the nasty bits the book mentioned (If you have read it you will understand).  Soon enough I forgot where I was and completely got in to the film.

One of the biggest issues this film had to face was the fact the book was an erotic novel and they somehow had to put it on the screen, without being too pornographic. Unsurprisingly, the producers failed miserably at doing this. There’s not enough sex to excite fans of the books but there’s too much nudity for a film at the cinema. The fans of 50 shades of grey would of already read the book that is crammed full of sex. The film is advertised as having a whole twenty minutes of on-screen sex in it, I actually don’t think there was, It didn't seem like it at all.
The badly filmed sex scenes was not the worst part of the film, What’s worse is that Anastasia questions Mr Grey’s twisted nature on several occasions, but still does not cut ties with him. We have to sit and watch a woman who knows her boyfriend is troubled but does not know why or can not do anything about it, just be trapped in an obeying relationship. It’s infuriating to watch.

The film contains a lot of nudity and I expected that too with the film being an 18, I think I saw a bit too much skin in parts and even though this films audience was aimed at women the nudity was extremely unbalanced. Jamie Dornan is topless in many scenes but he’s got nothing on Dakota Johnson who probably spends more of the film completely naked than she does clothed .

Overall the movie 'Fifty Shades of Grey' is considerably better written than the book. It is also dare I say it, sort of classy, although I think the film was a too rushed, it jumped from scene to scene trying to fit as much of the book in as possible and also didn't live up to the expectations I had.

Have you seen it? Let me know what you think.

  1. I've read all 3 books about 4 times each. the second and third books are my all time favourite, simply because the storyline is so much more intense and more characters are brought in. I watched fifty shades on Saturday with my friend who is also a fan. we had huge expectations of the film, and yes its classy but Dakota needs to win an award for her bravery - where Jamie I felt got away with things very lightly! I think Dakota was perfect as Ana, but Jamie was wooden and doesn't have the same hubba bubba to me as someone like Henry Cavill would in that part! I totally agree with you, and lets hope that they don't butcher the next two films! Great post xxxx

  2. I think I'd want to read the book before the film and I've heard mixed things.
